What makes an event a “trauma” versus “just a bad day” is how much it throws off someone’s ability to return to their previous normal. In trauma recovery, we don’t work back to the pre-trauma state. Nothing can do that. But we do work on integrating the trauma into your narrative and identifying what you need to empower yourself into moving forward with confidence again.

In the first session, we will review confidentiality and what limits to confidentiality I have to follow for ethical and legal reasons.  We will also go over any questions you have about the pre-session paperwork, then any questions which have come up about me, my work, or the concerns you're bringing to work on.  After that, we'll talk about the initial questionnaires you filled out before session.  This will take the bulk of our 90 minutes.  Part of that review conversation will be a "risk screening" for concerns like suicide, disordered relationship with food and/or body, depression, anxiety, or other concerns you've brought to me.   We will then establish initial goals for our work together, which is an open conversation that we can change at any time!

With teens, I require at least one parent to be present for the first part of the session so we all start on the same page with confidentiality and what concerns we're going to be working on.

What should i expect from the first session?

While I am not in network with any insurance companies, I am happy to offer a superbill (an augmented invoice with additional information required for out of network reimbursement) and a guide for how to request a "single case agreement" or "gap exception", etc to maximize any out of network benefits you may have with your policy.

Do you accept insurance? What are the costs?

There are a lot of answers to this question, and a lot of those differences are therapist dependent.

With me, we'll utilize a number of different therapy modalities, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Radically Open-DBT (RO-DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), Collaborative Dialectic Practices, Emotion Focused Therapy among others, and individualized to you and your goals.

Most of all, we'll utilize Narrative Therapy, which is based on the postmodern concept that each of us is living a story which is informed by societal norms, rules, our families, our genetics, and the events we go through. Narrative Therapy is about understanding how those things influence us, and reclaiming your authorship rights so you are the one writing your story.  

Most of the time, you won't directly see how those modalities are being used because my training has included wrapping them into what sounds like a "regular" conversation, some lessons, and me asking questions you probably haven't heard or thought of before so you can consider things in a new way. 

how does talk therapy work?

I primarily work with dancers, gymnasts, figure skaters, cheerleaders (aesthetic or artistic athletes), but am happy to work with athletes of just about any sport! I have also worked with volleyball players, soccer players, wrestlers, swimmers, and athletes of other sports!

I work with athletes of all levels, whether recreational, high school, college, pre-professional, elite, Olympic, or retired! It's about helping you work on your relationship with your body, clarify your sense of identity, and maximize your mental performance (though it can be about more too!).
